How to read a Supplement Facts label

Read the label editorial illustration with hands holding an amber bottle with a small ingredient panel

Demonstration article. This sample illustrates the RemedyWatch editorial format. It is not a completed clinical evidence review or a current product alert. Verify and replace the sample material before presenting it as published reporting.

A label-reading guide is most useful when it shows readers exactly where to look. Use an accurately reproduced, clearly identified label in the finished article, with an explanation beside each relevant part.

Begin with the serving information

Locate the serving size and servings per container. Read each listed amount in relation to that serving information, and avoid assuming that one capsule is always one serving.

Locate the ingredients

Find the named ingredients and their listed quantities. Record any terms that need clarification and distinguish the product’s factual label information from promotional text on the package.

Check identifying details

Find the manufacturer or distributor, product name, lot or batch information, and other identifying details. Those details are also useful when comparing a product against an official notice.

Use authoritative guidance

The FDA’s consumer information on dietary supplements is a starting point for further reading. Verify the current source when completing this article.

Next: understanding lot numbers.
